Electric Circuit

A closed and continuous path through which electric current flows is known as electric circuit. It has various components including:

S.No. Name Symbol Appearance
1 Source- Cell
2 Source - Battery
3 Load
4 Switch
5 Fuse
6 Connecting Wires
7

Rheostat

(Variable Resistance)

8 Ammeter
9 Voltmeter
  • a source of current (say a cell or battery),
  • a load (say a bulb or any other appliance),
  • a switch/key (to open or close a circuit),
  • a fuse,
  • all connected through connecting wires.
  • The connecting wires are generally made of copper.

    Circuit Diagram:

An electric circuit is a path through which electric current flow. The simplest circuit we come across is the circuit consisting of a battery and a bulb in a torch. When the torch is switched on electric current flows through the bulb which lights it up.Drawing diagrams of the actual components in a circuit is a very time consuming and skillful task. It is much easier to use symbol of  each of the components. Diagrams drawn in this way are called circuit diagrams.

When the key is closed, then the circuit is called closed circuit. This means that current would flow through the circuit to operate the device. When the key is open, then the circuit is called open circuit. This means that current would not flow through the circuit.
